Generic Conventions

Generic conventions are the themes that make a thriller what it is. Examples are, edge of your seat suspense, the flawed character, the gaze(seeing things you shouldn't and being watched), located in a safe environment to play on your fears and phobias, use of creepy music, enigma that needs to be solved.

Editing priorities

Things we need to focus on are:

Adding in audio to compliment the action within the thriller, and to add suspense.

Improve on the editing by adding in the transistions so the linking between clips is smoother.

We need to add in effects, such as other sounds, slow down and speed up some clips and add in the titles.

Response to feedback

Overall our feedback was really good. We didn't get any bad comments which we are really impressed about. Due to lack of time for rough cutting, we didn't manage to add any sound or transitions. These would have helped to make our sequence make more sense. The feedback which was helpful was the idea to add in non-diegetic sounds, such as when people are struggling, footsteps and wind etc... These would make out thriller more realistic and interesting.

Rough Cut Feedback

Editing:
Faily well edited, some bits when the time between the shots was a bit long.
there was some really good cuts.
the editing of the footage into sepia tone at some points was highly effective.
well done

Camerwork:
captures something in every shot
no pointless shots - all adds to the story
wicked running shot with the knees

Sound:
unfortunately there is no soundtrack
Add non-diegetic sounds such as footsteps, wind, struggerling etc.

mise en scene:
mysterious - good use of props; rope, stick etc.
good location
good effects
fits generic conventions
costume - made it more obvious who is the killer
good contrast between slow and fast paced shots

Narrative:
mystery - which characters are which; victim or villain
violence - hand over mouth, stuggerling, tying up shots.
Death - shots of the "dead" body

Teacher Feedback

Your blog needs a bit more work, including a full analysis of a student and real thriller opening from everyone in the group. Also some research into your mise en scene would be useful, i.e. clips from other films that inspire you would be ideal. Think of your blog as a production scrapbook.
I am also concerned that your ideas are over ambitious, i.e. how do you intend to film cut wrists etc?
It might be worth sitting down as a group and revisit the ideas process, come up with a clear idea of what you are trying to achieve. I am concerned you are struggling a little. Lets talk next lesson.
